If you will be pickling and canning vegetables from your garden this summer, create embossed labels to affix to each jar by completing the steps below. Afterward, store the jars in your pantry or secure a ribbon and note card to each jar if you decide to give some of the pickled items to family and friends.

Materials

  • template
  • self-adhesive label sheets
  • printer
  • aluminum tray
  • paintbrush
  • embossing ink
  • ink pad
  • embossing powder
  • heat gun
  • canning jars and lids
  • ruler
  • stickers or self-adhesive embellishments
  • ribbon
  • name tags
  • hole puncher
  • string
  • scissors

Design Or Purchase Customized Labels And Emboss Them

Design a template online or have customized labels prepared by a printing company. Choose labels that identify the types of vegetables that you will be canning. Consider using a large font when designing the labels so that the words that are printed on each one can clearly be seen from a distance. Decide which letters on each label you would like to emboss. Embossed lettering will be raised and will help the labels stand out and have a distinct appearance.

Place one sheet of the customized labels in an aluminum tray. Use a paintbrush to apply embossing ink to the portion of each label that is being embossed. Sprinkle embossing powder on top of the ink-covered sections. Hold the tip of a heat gun several inches above the sheet of labels. After turning the gun on, move the tool back and forth over the embossing powder. Continue heating the powder until it has melted and is smooth. Emboss the remaining labels in the same manner.

Affix Labels And Embellishments To Jars And Secure Ribbon And Name Tags

After filling jars with pickled vegetables and sealing the containers, affix a label to the side of each one. Use a ruler to help straighten the labels before pressing them against the glass. Add stickers or self-adhesive embellishments to the jars to personalize them. If you are going to be giving some of the jarred vegetables to friends and family members, tie a piece of ribbon around the neck of each jar and form bows with all of the ribbons.

Use a hole puncher to create holes in the corners of gift tags and insert a piece of string through each tag. Secure a gift card to each jar by tying its string around one of the ribbons. Line up the remaining jars of pickled vegetables on one of the shelves in your pantry.
